Designated the capital city of Kazakhstan in the late 1990s, Astana boasts a landscape glittering with new architecture and construction projects as the government infrastructure continues developing. The Ishim River divides the old and the new quarters of the city, with older, Soviet era structures being located on the north side while the governmental quarter and monuments like the monolithic Bayerek Tower spread out to the south. The central Avenue of the Republic is a hub of entertainment and business.



    • Thriving economy

Described as the most successful economy among post-Soviet countries, it is currently one of the strongest in central Asia. Development features investment in infrastructure, building free economic zones and a global financial centre in Astana. In July 2015 Kazakhstan became a member of the World Trade Organisation.

    • Government plans for enhancing mobility

The Strategy for Academic Mobility in Kazakhstan 2012-2020 elaborated by the Ministry of Education and Science aims to achieve 20% mobility of the total number of students by the end of the programme. Another strategic direction envisions participation of employers as an improvement tool of academic mobility by establishing direct contacts with foreign partners.


    • Bolashak International Scholarship

The “Bolashak” International Scholarship has been launched in 1993 by the president of Kazakhstan and since 2012 it is only given for master and PhD programmes. It is currently available for 33 countries and the majority of scholarships are for humanities, technical and medical specialisations. “Bolashak” is expanding every year and was named the best academic mobility programme among 11 others presented at the Going Global Conference in Miami in 2014.

    • Fulbright Scholarship Programme

The Fulbright programme is one of the most recognized and prestigious international scholarships in the world. Fulbright graduates hold high positions in professional fields such as education, journalism, as well as in the private sector.
The Fulbright student programme offers fellowships for graduating seniors and young professionals to study, conduct research, and teach languages abroad.

For the ongoing academic year, over 43,000 Kazakh students are studying abroad.
